What are Silicone Rubber Keypads?
Silicone keypads are manufactured through compression molding to create angled webbing around a switching center.
When the switch is depressed, the webbing uniformly deforms, producing a tactile response. Upon release, the webbing returns to its neutral position, providing positive feedback.
To create an electronic switch, a carbon or pill contact is placed at the base of the switching center. This contact meets the printed circuit board when the webbing deforms, allowing for a conductive signal.
The tactile response and travel of a key can be adjusted by altering the webbing design or the shore hardness of the silicone material. Tactile forces can reach up to 500g, depending on key sizes and shapes. The snap ratio of a keypad determines the tactile feel experienced by the user.
